Hashtag Following and Recommended for You — New Instagram Features

The new follow hashtags feature is rolling out now on Instagram. This might be great news for freebooters, and not so great news for users who are already disillusioned with Instagram's algorithms. You can even see what hashtags your friends are following. Content under hashtags that the user engages with, through a heart or a comment, will be remembered by Instagram, and it took just a few days for Popper to feel that his feed was fine-tuned to his taste. The new feature will inject relevant content to feeds, and it will allow users to become more involved with even their most niche interests. Similar to people you follow, hashtags you follow respect your privacy settings. It's worth noting that, unless you have a private profile, other users will be able to see which hashtags you are following. For those of you that are frequent festival goers, this is the ideal feature.

To mark the launch of the new feature, Instagram has also altered the Following page. Talk of "shadowbans" for using completely innocuous hashtags such as #kansas or #citycentre (you may wish to check this list) have been around for a while, and it seems inevitable that Instagram will have to have some tough moderation in place to stop popular hashtags from being undermined by hijackers. Instagram has made improvements to its systems that source and rank hashtag content to mitigate the problem. The app's "Don't Show for This Hashtag" option lets users tag irrelevant or inappropriate posts, helping to provide a more personalized experience for each user and sift out poor-quality content.

Many users will be concerned that this is another move from Instagram that will make the service increasingly unusable.

From time to time, Instagram may pull in a post that uses a hashtag you follow, when the picture doesn't actually have anything to do with the topic you're interested in.

"Today we're introducing the ability to follow hashtags, giving you new ways to discover photos, videos and people on Instagram", the social network said to start off the official blog post announcing the new feature.
