India Bans Condom Ads From Prime-Time TV

The decision was taken after Advertisement Standard Council of India (ASCI) requested the Government to take a call on the content and timing.

India, the second-most populous nation and racing towards overtaking China, is cracking down on condom advertisements because they are considered "indecent" for children. The advisory signs off by saying that any failure will attract action as per provisions of the rules.

In an advisory to all television channels on Monday, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry had asked channels to restrict condom advertisements to late night between 10 pm and 6 am. The advertisements will now be shown only between 10 PM and 6 AM.

The Ministry of Broadcasting and Information Technology has strictly advised the TV operators not to run the advertisement of condoms that are for the particular age group. The steps have been taken to keep the indecent, vulgar, suggestive, repulsive and offensive condom ads away from the children.

It said such advertisements may be telecast between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.to avoid exposure of such material to children.

In making condom ads explicit, condom makers are taking away from the goal of airing these ads on television - to let condoms be perceived as instruments of protection during sexual intercourse, a habit most of TV-watching India is yet to adopt. In fact, the best way to ensure that sex, a natural phenomenon, doesn't become an unhealthy practice is by using condoms consistently and correctly, and educating people about their existence and how to use them. They feel that the condom ads are too raunchy and don't deserve to be shown during prime time or any other time of the day.

One of the steamiest ads, for the Manforce condom brand, features Sunny Leone, an Indian-American actress who used to star in pornographic films.
