Jeff Sessions Faces Tough Cannabis Questions-From DOJ Interns

ABC News reported the video came from a summer intern lecture series event June 22 that featured Sessions taking questions for 25 minutes from college students working at the Department of Justice.

Brave Justice Department intern puts it to the boss: What's the deal with you and cannabis? "[It] guarantees the right for the american people to keep and bear arms and I intend to defend that second amendment". But federal officials "did not conclude that the bathroom question was decided by Title IX", the law banning sex discrimination in education, and chose to leave that up to state and local governments. Sessions asked in response to the young woman's question.

"We need doctors to get better informed", he said.

"People didn't seem to mind really hammering tobacco, which is a long-term health problem for people", he said, "but I think likewise we should be talking about some of the dangers of marijuana as we go forward".

Sessions sparred a bit with interns on other issues as well. Sessions told one intern who asked why he favored stricter controls on marijuana than guns.

"That's an apples and oranges question, I would say first and foremost", he said.

"I believe last year was the first year that automobile accidents that occurred were found to have been caused more by drugs than by alcohol", he said.

Sessions sarcastically called the intern "Dr. Whatever Your Name Is" and advised her to contact the AMA. He was talking about Philando Castile who was killed during a traffic stop a year ago by a police officer in Minnesota with his girlfriend and baby watching and Michael Brown, an unarmed man shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014. The student said that the people they were afraid of were not necessarily their neighbors, but the police.

"I grew up in one of these communities", the intern said.

"Well that may be the view in Berkley, but it's not the view in most places in the country", Sessions replied. He also claimed cities like Chicago and Baltimore have high murder rates because police there "have abandoned traditional police activities" - an assertion many in those cities would likely contest.
