Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is getting a two-player versus mode

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle caught us by surprise when it launched in August, as it managed to mix the charm of both Mario and the Rabbids with strategic gameplay similar to X-COM. Sharp enough to test against another human player?

The critically-acclaimed game receives a free update - a new local Versus mode where two players will use their tactical skills to play against each other on the same screen (sharing a pair of Joy-Con™ controllers or using the Nintendo Switch™ Pro Controllers) to fight on unique and evolving battlefields. In the game's additional co-op challenges, players team up with a friend in local multiplayer, where they'll play three levels of difficulty, taking on adversaries as a team. One big difference between Versus and the story mode is that each player will only have three actions per turn, making it a battle of strategy as you choose between using a turn to move all of your fighters, or putting all of your actions into one or two characters attacking.

The characters players can select in Versus mode will be heavily upgraded with selectable, unlockable loadouts and variants. Every character is unlocked from the start, but initially you can only pick their all-purpose build, before later unlocking more specific builds such as Rabbid Peach's healer set-up, which has more Power Orbs invested in its healing abilities.

There's a lot of depth to uncover in these matches, but they're also meant to be short and snappy - and if you've got a short attention span or just want to pump up the challenge, you can limit matches to seven or 10 turns, and set short, medium, or long time limits on those turns. "If one team is on the ropes, these are a potential lifeline that can yank them back into the lead".
