NFL considering 'targeting rule' similar to one in college football

There have been many proponents of the potential rule change, but Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner isn't one.

In the wake of a week of play marred by several unsafe head-to-head hits, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent announced on Wednesday that the league is considering taking further action to protect its players.

"It's bad", Wagner told ProFootballTalk Wednesday. "You can just see it now, you watch the college games and they kicking players out for clean hits because they can't tell what is a clean hit from certain angles". "You can just see it now".

Buffalo Bills strong safety Micah Hyde (23) argues with New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (87) during the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Wagner knows that there are some adjustments that need to be made to the league's current policy, but doesn't think incorporating a targeting rule into the NFL is a solution.

After Monday night's game between the Bengals and the Steelers that featured several punishing, terrifying hits, it's clear something has to change in regards to the NFL's current targeting rule.

In 2016, the National Football League adopted a rule in which players who receive two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a game would be automatically ejected. "What's a hit that's worthy of ejection?"

The NCAA put in their targeting rule before this year's college football season, with the rule specifically saying that "no player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent.with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder".
