Officer off job over PTSD: 'I feel punished'

Officer off job over PTSD: 'I feel punished'

A Florida police officer who was at the Pulse nightclub shooting was relieved of his duties because he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

One of the first police officers to arrive on the scene at the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, FL is losing his job thanks to the after-effects of the mass shooting, said USA Today.

In six months, Delgado would reach his 10-year anniversary with the force and become vested in his pension.

He told WESH 2 News he's been on light duty for several months and he's just six months shy of tenure, which would have made him eligible for full retirement benefits.

Delgado was one of the first officers to arrive at Pulse nightclub on June 12, 2016 after a gunman opened fire on patrons inside, killing 49 people in the second-deadliest mass shooting in United States history.

Delgado instead worked a desk job for the last eight months - answering phones and doing other administrative tasks - but the Town Council Tuesday voted unanimously to dismiss him.

Six more months on the job would have allowed Cpl.

Colon, 26, was shot three times in the leg and his bones shattered as desperate club-goers trampled him in a bid to get out of the club.

"Too many people. God forbid, something happens - I don't know if I'd be able to react", Delgado said speaking about being fearful even going to restaurants and bars. Delgado makes $38,500 annually, Town Clerk Cathy Williams said.

Delgado has been with the department for 9 1/2 years.

As it stands now, he will only receive 42 percent of his salary starting when he's 55 years old.

"It was a feeling you can't describe, you can't put into words knowing that you helped save someone", he said.

At Tuesday's meeting, Mayor Eddie Cole questioned why funds from the onePULSE Foundation weren't diverted to law enforcement officers and their families but declined to provide additional information about Delgado's dismissal, citing privacy laws. "It's a small town".

'Just let me get vested and I will be more than happy to pack up my troubles and leave, ' he said.

Delgado said the issue of PTSD needs to be taken more seriously.

"I never thought I would have gotten to this point".
