Pantone Color of the Year 2018 | Ultra Violet 18

Pantone Color of the Year 2018 | Ultra Violet 18

Pantone announced Thursday that it's 2018 Color of the Year is the regal-looking deep-toned purple Ultra Violet.

The color was selected because it blends red and blue, two very polarizing opposites in today's society, Time reported.

"Ultra Violet's association with forward-thinking vision has made it a source of inspiration for the most innovative players in business and technology", it said. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.

The color experts at the Carlstadt, New Jersey-based Pantone say the deep purple shade was chosen to evoke a counterculture flair, a grab for originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking. "The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own".

"The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than "what's trending" in the world of design; it's truly a reflection of what's needed in our world today", said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the color institute.

It represents royalty, mindfulness and iconic rock stars: Purple. Ultra Violet follows Pantone's 2017 Color of the Year, "Greenery". Pantone has been selecting a color of the year since 2000.

Behr Paint suggests King's Court as a paint color that corresponds to Ultra Violet, Pantone's 2018 Color of the Year.
