Security Heightened As Liberians Await Supreme Court Ruling on Electoral Fraud Case

Liberia's Supreme Court has ruled that evidence of fraud during October's first round of presidential elections was insufficient to merit a re-run.

He said, the Supreme Court can not speculate that since it was proven that fraud and irregularities occurred at some polling places, it occurred Nationwide.

As a result the commission was prohibited from airing its views in public on "any matters which may grow out of the runoff election", Banks said.

The ruling ends weeks of uncertainty over the electoral process in a country that experienced 14 years of devastating civil conflict that ended in 2003. That means current Vice President Joseph Boakai and perennial challenger, former football star and current Senator George Weah will face each other in a national poll.

The NEC denies claims of fraud and gross irregularities, but it says there were challenges on Election Day that can not overturn the outcome of the polls.

The runoff which had earlier been scheduled for November 7 was delayed following a preemptive prohibition obtained by the opposition Liberty Party or LP citing fraud and irregularities.

During the first round of the presidential poll held on October 10, Weah amassed 38 percent of he votes, while Boakai came second with 29 percent of ballots cast.

NEC in its ruling, upheld by the Board of Commissioners dismissed the claims of massive fraud and irregularities during an appeal hearing sometime last month.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is due to step down on January 18 after completing two five-year mandates.
