Shakib Al Hasan named as Bangladesh's new Test captain

This will be Shakib's return to the lead role in the Test format having held the charge from 2009-2011 before Mushfiqur took over.

Hathurusingha also met with other BCB high-ups including CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury and directors Ismail Haider Mallick, Khaled Mahmud and Akram Khan to exchange his views on the future of Bangladesh cricket.

BCB chief Nazmul Hasan stated, "We can't say the specific reasons behind the decision (to sack Mushfiqur). We think he should focus on batting and that's why we are taking some pressure off him", he added.

"And we want the best from Mushfiqur in batting".

"There will be no change in the other formats", he said.

Shakib Al Hasan had cited workload when he urged for a break from Tests.

Mushfiqur led Bangladesh in 34 Tests since 2011, guiding them to some remarkable wins over England, Sri Lanka and Australia since a year ago. Since being sacked as skipper in 2011, the left-hander has gone on to establish himself as one of the leading all-rounders in the modern game. Bangladesh have lost seven of their nine Tests this year.

South Africa beat Bangladesh in every game across Tests, ODIs and T20Is as the visitors battled alien conditions and a host of injury-related problems. Interestingly, Shakib himself was unavailable for that particular series after he had ostensibly cited workload concerns.

Shakib Al Hasan, the ace allrounder, was named Bangladesh's Test captain for a second time on Sunday (December 10), with the upcoming tour by Sri Lanka to be his first assignment.

This series of changes was set off by the resignation of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha during the tour of South Africa in September-October.

Even though he had led them to drawn series against the likes of England and Australia at home, Bangladesh have made the right decision to sack Mushfiqur from Test captaincy.

Mahmudullah, who has replaced Tamim Iqbal as the vice-captain of the Test team, had earlier resigned from the same post after poor performance.
