These 15 vehicles are IIHS' top safety picks for 2018

By ratcheting up the standards to achieve the desirable Top Safety Pick+ designation year after year, the IIHS has effectively influenced the auto industry to improve driver and now passenger protections.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its top vehicle safety picks for 2018.

The number was actually down from a year ago and the new crash tests were not the only reason why. It began measuring both how well low and high beams illuminated the road and the amount of glare they produce for oncoming vehicles as part of its ratings in 2016.

Most of the Top Safety Pick Plus Awards went to Hyundai Motor Company with 6 awards and Subaru with four.

"Cars are safer now than they ever have been", Lund believes with even more improvements in crash test performance and headlights, vehicles will be even safer down the road. Consumer Reports encourages vehicle shoppers to refer to crash-safety ratings and also to consider dynamic performance (such as braking distances and accident-avoidance capabilities) when selecting their next auto.

The IIHS which conducts crash tests and evaluates automobile safety standards says it's pleased with how well manufacturers are making the grade.

Forty-seven others did earn the lesser Top Safety Pick award.

In years past, side impact and hits to the front on the driver's side have been analyzed.

Vehicles the IIHS studied included small cars, midsize cars, large luxury cars, midsize SUVs and midsize luxury SUVs.
