Two guys, a girl, and a Poképlace: Ryan Reynolds is Detective Pikachu

The "Deadpool" star has signed on to star in the live-action Pokémon movie "Detective Pikachu", according to the Hollywood Reporter. Casting has begun - Kathryn Newton and Justice Smith are lined up to play the eponymous detective's human friends - but now a big ol' Hollywood star is attached too.

Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing the film, which will start shooting mid-January in London. Despite Mr. DeVito's comments when the project was announced previous year, it looks like Ryan Reynolds will be voicing the character, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The report goes on to state that the role is motion capture "in nature".

Interestingly, Reynolds will be playing Pikachu, the adorable little guy who doesn't actually communicate anything aside from his own name.

As of now, Detective Pikachu remains without a release date. The team is later joined by a spunky journalist (Newton) who helps them on their mission. Folks who are used to Pikachu's cute anime voice might be at a disadvantage, but it's wise to note that Detective Pikachu is a variant of the original character.

Detective Pikachu's plot will be based on a kidnapping, with Pikachu (Reynolds) assigned to hunt the offender down. Universal Pictures is handling distribution of the live-action film outside Japan; Toho will handle distribution in Japan.
