USA congratulates Iraq on end of war against Islamic State

The ISIS may have lost significant ground but it has not been yet defeated, British Prime Minister Theresa May has said, as she warned Iraq that the terror group still poses a threat, including from across the border. "We thank them for the vital role they played in supporting the Iraqi Security Forces to liberate Iraq".

Turkey would continue to work in solidarity with the Iraqi government in post-Daesh period like in the period of anti-Daesh fight, it added.

ISIS is an alternative acronym for IS.

However, Turnbull said while the Iraqi government's announcement was a "historic moment", the liberation of Iraq "does not mean the fight against terrorism and ISIS in Iraq is over".

The Islamic State group has repeatedly returned to their insurgent roots following territorial defeats, targeting Iraqi civilians and infrastructure far from frontline fighting.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull congratulated Iraq and the Iraqi Security Forces after its Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced that all areas of Iraq have been liberated from ISIS control.

"We have triumphed in little time", he said, hailing Iraq's "heroic armed forces".

IS fighters overran almost a third of Iraqi territory, including Mosul, the country's second largest city in the summer of 2014, declaring a caliphate that stretched from northern Syria to the outskirts of Baghdad.

Earlier on Saturday, Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Rasheed Yarallah, commander of western Iraq operations, announced the liberation of all Iraqi lands from IS militants after seizing the whole border areas and desert in western Iraq.

He said the Iraqi victory over the Daesh terrorist group has been realized with unity among Iraqis.
