Vice media apologizes for "perpetuating sexism in the media industry"

Vice media apologizes for

The newspaper, based on interviews with around a hundred current and former employees of Vice, has revealed Saturday that the company had signed four agreements amicably with employees to resolve charges of sexual harassment or defamation, with the payment of compensation.

Among the four cases has been the subject of payments, the chief executive officer Andrew Creighton has paid $ 135,000 to a former employee who claimed he was sacked for refusing to sleep with him, according to the New York Times.

"Listening to our employees over the past year, the truth is inescapable: from the top down, we have failed as a company to create a safe and inclusive workplace where everyone, especially women, can feel respected and thrive. We are really sorry", write the two bosses. They shared an even more detailed statements to employees.

Smith and Alvi said part of the problem was that they were unable to keep up with the growth and the sudden culture change they pursued, moving from a media company that covered "streetwear, drugs and sex" to one that pursued the reporting of "news and social justice issues".

The Times told the stories of one woman who said she had been forced to touch a co-worker's crotch while at a company event; another who said a fellow employee had grabbed her and tried to kiss her; and a third who said she was sacked after rejecting advances from a company executive. Romantic relationships between supervisors and employees are now forbidden.

A settlement in 2016 was reached for $135,000 with Creighton.

Co-founder and CEO of VICE. Another settlement earlier this year came from a former employee who was discriminated against after beginning a sexual relationship with her supervisor, former head of Vice News Jason Monica, who was sacked by the company last month.

Mojica, the former head of Vice News, was sacked last month.

A former Vice employee, Helen Donahue, reported to Ashbrooke that Mojica "had grabbed her breasts and buttocks at a company holiday party". The company settled for $24,000 in January to an employee of mixed race who said James made racist and sexist comments, including asking her about the color of her nipples.

James was placed on leave in late November.

In another dispute, freelance writer Jessica Hopper said she interviewed the rapper Murs for a February print issue. She declined, but her answer was changed to "Yes" in the published version of the article.

Gloria Steinem was named to Vice's new Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board.

.

As most of you know, The New York Times has been working on a piece about the workplace culture here at Vice. "Ms. Hopper was right to call us on our conduct at the time, and we are still ashamed of it".

Despite the settlements, many women still felt victim or harassment - including at least two episodes with Vice's chief digital officer Mike Germano, who founded Carrot Creative. He asked to have sex with her.

Vice Media, the young company that boomed from hipster Canadian magazine to $6 billion media company with offices around the world, is home to a spectacularly "degrading and uncomfortable" environment for women, according to a report by the New York Times. "Never before have I seen such a dysfunctional workplace".
