Wilson and Ovechkin lead Capitals past Blackhawks | 6-2

Nicklas Backstrom, who had a goal and two assists, Wilson and Alex Ovechkin, who scored his National Hockey League leading 21st goal, tallied in a span of 3:28 in the second half of the first frame. Backstrom hadn't scored since October 14 in Philadelphia, matching the second-longest drought of his career.

Chicago's leading scorer Patrick Kane (27 points) has gone two straight games without a point.

The Blackhawks (12-11-5) shook up their lines to get some more offense, and even though they fired 39 shots at Braden Holtby, the changes didn't result in a lot of good scoring opportunities.

Tom Wilson scored twice, Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom registered goals, and the trio combined for seven assists Wednesday as the Capitals used a first-period scoring flurry to cruise to a 6-2 victory over the sliding Chicago Blackhawks.

Backstrom ended his goal drought at 11:54 of the first when he finished a tic-tac-toe sequence by one-timing Ovechkin's pass past Forsberg for his fourth of the season. Shortly after a faceoff in the Hawks defensive zone, Tom Wilson flicked a seemingly harmless puck at the net, but the shot beat Forsberg short side at 14:53 to put the Hawks in a 2-0 hole. But that five minutes doomed them, and they didn't have the firepower to come back after Lance Bouma scored late in the first period to give them a little lift until Jonathan Toews scored on a breakaway late in the third. Wilson had his first four-point game, and Ovechkin also extended his goals streak to three games.

Washington has won seven of its last eight against the Blackhawks.

"He's always been a guy that's been full committed at both ends of the ice", Holtby said about Wilson.

Backstrom's goal catapulted the Capitals top-line forward. C Chandler Stephenson saw action after missing one game with an upper-body injury. Kase, who missed 10 games last month due to injury, already has six goals for a new single-season career high. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said there was a "likelihood" that G Corey Crawford would return to the lineup Sunday against Arizona.
