A power failure sent part of CES into darkness

The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is about to get underway, and some of its key themes are already clear. Numerous high-tech displays showing off the latest electronics were not visible inside the hall.

The lights went out here shortly after 11 am on the second day of the show. Emergency lights stayed on, and backup batteries kept wireless internet connections functioning. Parts of South and Central Halls, where numerous exhibitors are set up to showcase their products, have been thrown into darkness. With AI playing a growing role across a range of technological areas, from biometric identification to autonomous driving, a number of major companies have stepped up their R&D in this area, and that boom is going to be reflected at CES.

A preliminary assessment found that moisture from heavy rains on Tuesday had caused a "flashover" in one of the convention center's transformers, it said.

Amazon will have its own booth for Alexa at CES this year, and it's promising "exciting new products along with hundreds of vendors who have chosen to develop products based on Amazon voice technology".

On Las Vegas' physical streets, traffic crawled on Tuesday as thousands of CES attendees shuttled between hotels and conference venues in heavy rain.

CES is historically home to technology advancements and prototypes from the likes of Google, Samsung and Silicon Valley start ups, however this year commercial road transport solutions aim to steal the show. Long lines formed at the convention center for cabs.
