Amazon Studios To Focus On Big Budget Movies

Amazon Studios To Focus On Big Budget Movies

In the case of The Big Sick, this strategy helped launch the film into being a bonafide box office hit. FilmNation and Endeavor Content sold USA rights to the film by the This Is Us series creator to Amazon for $10 million in late December, the first major deal Ropell made since taking over as head of WW production at Amazon.

In the process, Amazon Studios has become one of the most dependable new media studios in the indie film circuit. And for anyone who has been a fan of the remarkable arthouse films that Amazon has supported in the past few years (Manchester By the Sea, The Salesman, Chi-Raq, The Lost City of Z, Love & Friendship, Last Flag Flying, and The Neon Demon), this is a huge bummer.

In what will come as a relief to sellers arriving here at Sundance, Amazon Studios' Worldwide Film Head Jason Ropell is debunking a Reuters report this morning that the company is essentially bailing on the indie film space.

However, now it seems the company is looking to broaden its appeal by investing in more commercial blockbusters.

The move reflects a new phase in the online retailer's entertainment strategy. According to sources, the company will increase its spending on new films, dedicating as much as $50 million to more commercial projects.

Amazon Studios so far has focused on bringing a little culture to the world of exclusive video streaming.

"Back in 2014, this site ran an in-depth piece about how the current Hollywood paradigm of "$200 million franchise play" or "$2 million indie movie" had led to a dearth of mid-budget movies for adults, and had left the filmmakers responsible for movies like that (people like Spike Lee, Jim Jarmsuch, and Terry Gilliam) out in the cold. The firm reportedly spent $90 million on Bright, starring Will Smith. "Our roots are in independent/prestige film and we intend to continue in that space using it as a springboard to expansion and scale".
