Yemen's currency has risen sharply following Saudi Arabia's announcement of a US$2 billion (Dh7.3bn) cash injection, bringing hope of relief for citizens struggling with high prices in a country that imports most of its food.

The decision, announced on Friday by a spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, comes as political parties including Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) continue to hold talks about forming a coalition government following the German federal election last September.

The Air Defence Forces affiliated to the Coalition Forces Supporting Legitimacy in Yemen detected a ballistic missile at 12:38pm on Saturday launched by Iran-affiliated Houthi militias from Saada Governorate towards the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, according to the Coalition's Official Spokesman Colonel Turki Al Maliki.

The war, which enlists the participation among others of the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Morocco, Sudan, and Senegal, has been reinforced by weapon supplies and logistical support from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Germany is not the first European country to stop selling arms to countries involved in the Yemen war.

For almost three years, a Saudi-led coalition backed by the United States has been carrying out airstrikes in Yemen against Iranian-allied rebels, known as Houthis, after the rebels overran the capital of Sanaa and forced Yemen's government into exile.

Washington signed a $110-billion arms deal with Riyadh previous year.

A recent United Nations report on human rights abuses related to foreign intervention in Yemen documented a number of civilian casualties inflicted by Saudi-led coalition bombing.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE were among the top recipients of German-made weaponry in 2016. Jordan hosts a squadron of German Tornado fighter planes and other hardware used by German Armed Forces.
