Barty to play Kerber in Sydney final

Kerber, a former No. 1 and the 2016 Australian Open champion, won all four singles at the Hopman Cup and now all four in Sydney en route to the final.

She is yet to drop a set over six matches in qualifying or the main draw and will next meet world number 22 Kerber who staged a 6-3 6-1 victory over Dominika Cibulkova in the last eight.

The country's top-ranked female player shook off an early serving funk to come back from two sets down and set up a decider against two-time major victor Kerber, who dismantled plucky Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-2 6-3 on Friday evening.

In the end, Kerber's on-court composure was what counted against her younger counterpart, earning three championship points and claiming the silverware at the first opportunity. But I'm feeling good - I'm healthy.

"There is nothing better than playing at home, playing in front of a home crowd".

Australia's top-ranked female Ashleigh Barty has fallen short of winning a first title on home soil, losing the Sydney International final to resurgent former world No.1 Angelique Kerber.

Barty will play in her first home WTA final on after overcoming compatriot Daria Gavrilova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

"It's nice getting a bit of confidence going into our biggest tournament for us", Barty said of next week's Australian Open.

Barty fought hard on Saturday in muggy conditions but was no match for the German two-time grand slam champion's experience, going down 6-4 6-4 at Sydney Olympic Park.

"We have set up a ideal platform for me to work with this year to try and go deep in tournaments, whether it's in Australia or in Europe or in the States".

In men's quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini beat No. 5 Adrian Mannarino 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-2 and Daniil Medvedev defeated Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-3.

The 84th-ranked Medvedev came back from a set down to move within one win of what would be his maiden ATP title against rising Australian star Alex de Minaur.
