Basketball jerseys get Kings team booted from recreational league

"It's a racial thing", Tony Rue, a parent of one of the players on the opposing team January 7, told WXIX.

According to Cincinnati.com, jerseys worn by a local OH recreational youth basketball team were called out as racist and sexist Sunday by parents, leading to an early end to the team's season.

"There is enough hate, bullying, and aggressive behavior in the world that these kids, parents, and schools shouldn't have to deal with bigotry and lewd innuendos on jerseys and in team names in a school district represented recreational basketball league", Rue's Facebook post continued.

Rue was there for his son's recreational basketball league.

This week, a spokesperson for the league said that the Kings team wouldn't be allowed to play any more games.

Although the teams playing weren't reportedly affiliated with the school districts, according to the news outlet, they rented space to play in that gym Sunday, but didn't wind up finishing the game because their offensive jerseys cut it short. One jersey read "Knee Grow" on the back and another read "Coon". "Then their parents came over, and they were mad about paying the $7 entry fee and not completing the game".

The incident has drawn the attention of the Cincinnati chapter of the NAACP, which wants to have a chat with the people in charge of the rec league. Joe Mallory, first VP of the NAACP in Cincinnati had a message for the kids involved. "They're inflammatory, and they're divisive to the entire community".

"It's everybody's problem. It's everybody's business that when these things happen we all stand up and speak out on it", Mallory said.

The teams with the controversial uniforms were not affiliated with the OH school districts other than renting the space and having players who were students. "This team has been restricted from any further use of district facilities".

'Based on the information that we received, the actions and conduct of the team in question did not comply with our stated mission and expected standards and that team has, therefore, been dismissed from our league, ' spokesman Ben Goodyear told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

In a statement Monday, Kings division coordinator Charrise Middleton said the team was immediately removed from the league once she learned about the uniforms.

"Kings Rec Basketball for grades 7-12 does not in any way support or condone the uniform infractions that occurred", Middletown said. That team won't return to play this season, she said.

Middleton also supplied a statement from the team's coach that said, "We sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by the jerseys". He noted that the team "offered to cover them up or change", but that the league still chose to eject the team, "and we have accepted that decision".
