Controversial equaliser sees Watford fight back against Southampton

James Ward-Prowse scored Southampton's goals in the 20th and 44th minutes, with Watford jeered off by its own fans at halftime.

The Southampton players ended up surrounding the referee after Doucoure's 90th minute leveller, which was the 1000th league goal that the Saints had conceded in the Premier League era.

"Roger really should also have been helped out by his assistant, who was in the ideal position to see Abdoulaye Doucoure put the ball past keeper Alex McCarthy with his hands, not his head".

VAR had been given a quiet debut in an FA Cup tie at Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday and a League Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Arsenal on Wednesday but it still resulted in much debate about how effective the trial had been.

However, it is still some way off from appearing in the Premier League. "[If] VAR comes in we probably wouldn't get that but today we got it".

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "It's one of them".

Since fighting hard to retain manager Marco Silva's services in November following interest from Everton, Watford has won just two of its 10 Premier League matches, losing seven of them. "We are very sad but we have to accept the rules".

"Everybody makes mistakes but the problem is at this level you have a lot to play for so we are disappointed".

The draw - and a win for West Brom - left Swansea still at the foot of the Premier League table, four points behind 17th-placed Bournemouth.

"I understand Southampton are unhappy like I was not one time, more than one time when the mistake is against us". "Something can happen and this season we've had decisions go against us. Nothing, only talk about this", Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal told the BBC.

"This is one of the situations VAR will in the future say clear penalty".

Unfortunately for Southampton, they aren't being used in the Premier League.

While the two matches in England to have so far featured a VAR have largely passed off without incident, the same is not in true in France where the system in place for goal-line reviews was suspended Thursday following "serious dysfunctions".

And even Deeney admitted VAR would have ruled out the goal.
