Egypt's Salah wins African Footballer of the Year prize

Salah won ahead of Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane of Senegal and Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the other finalists at the Confederation of African Football awards ceremony in Accra, Ghana. Salah became the first Egyptian to win the award in 34 years following his compatriot and Al Ahly legend Mahmoud El-Khatib's win in 1983.

He is now the Premier League's second top scorer with 17 goals, and has enjoyed a stellar year for both club and country. The CAF award comes just less than a month after Salah was crowned the BBC African Footballer of the Year.

Mohamed Salah played a significant role in securing Egypt a place at the World Cup, which takes place in Russian Federation later this year. "And to have a great season with the clubs, with Roma and Liverpool".

Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria won Women's Player of the Year, and Patson Daka of Zambia was named Youth Player of the Year. "2017 was an unbelievable year for me", Salah said after being presented the award, as quoted by Egyptian website King Fut.

Egypt also won CAF National Team of the Year, and its Argentinian coach, Hector Cuper, was named Coach of the Year.

The 25-year-old Salah had a memorable year, first as part of the Egypt team that made the African Cup of Nations final in February.

The Liverpool midfielder made it clear that he will be delighted if he continues to win this award year after year.

Ahmed Yahya, president of Mauritania Football Federation was named football leader of the year - a reward for his country's tremendous improvement and progress in African Club competitions.

The Platinium Awards went to president of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo and the president-elect of Liberia George Opong Weah - the 1995 African Footballer of the year victor.
