England socccer great Jimmy Armfield dies

Armfield played 43 times for England, captaining the side 15 times.

It is likely he would have been part of the England team for the 1966 World Cup, but injury meant he missed out. He had been fighting cancer for many years.

At worldwide level, the flying right-back represented England at the 1962 World Cup with great esteem before missing out on 1966 after breaking his toe during a warm-up game against Finland.

Only players who were on the pitch in the final received winners' medals but that was rectified 43 years later when Armfield eventually received his medal. He led Leeds to the final of the European Cup in the 1974/75 season at Parc des Princes in Paris.

"We have many wonderful messages of love and support, for which we are grateful, and moved by all the kind words".

Armfield went on to utilise his fantastic knowledge of the game and tactical insights, turning his hand to media work notably his co-commentary working for BBC Radio as well as working as a journalist with the Daily Express.

Blackpool have announced all revenue from home ticket sales from their match against Charlton on Saturday will be donated to Trinity Hospice, where Armfield spent his final days following a long battle with cancer.

A Blackpool statement read: "Blackpool Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of its record appearance holder and vice-president Jimmy Armfield at the age of 82".

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jimmy's wife Anne, his two sons, Duncan and John, and the rest of the Armfield family at this time". "The other was football, especially Blackpool, England and his colleagues at the PFA (Professional Footballers' Association)", it added. "Once again, the family extends its thanks as we try to come to terms in a world without Jimmy". He was named the club's Young Player of the Year in 1959, and before heading to the World Cup in 1966, finished runner-up to Bobby Charlton as the English Footballer of the Year.
