Exiled Mugabe Ally Says Mnangagwa's Government Is 'Illegitimate'

Moyo, a former higher education minister under the last president and an ardent Mugabe loyalist, said Zimbabwe's new President Emmerson Mnangagwa stole power and was leading an "illegal regime".

Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe was ousted by a "military coup" that forced his resignation, former cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo said in an interview with the BBC broadcast on Thursday. The BBC interview was done via a television link from an undisclosed location.

Moyo has been disparaging the government of Mnangagwa as illegitimate.

Moyo said Mnangagwa and his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, had "seized power through the bullet and not the ballot", and called for a return to constitutionalism.

"This is in part because our trade patterns have been aligned to service the requirements of former colonial powers and partly because many African countries essentially produce similar goods, mainly agricultural and mineral commodities", Geingob said in a statement delivered during the official opening of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair a year ago.

"There is massive disgruntlement by members of Zanu-PF to the manner in which President Robert Gabriel Mugabe continues to be humiliated and ill-treated by the coup conspirators and terrorist junta", Zhuwao wrote on the New Zimbabwe news website.

Zhuwao - who was part of a faction loyal to former first lady Grace Mugabe - said that before Mugabe was pressured into resigning on November 24 groups that included women, youths and traditional leaders, as well as entrepreneurs, farmers and students had been joining forces within the ruling party.

Mnangagwa is introducing himself to the regional leaders ahead of general elections in his country later this year.

Moyo made further claims that those running the government are the most feared people in the country as they were involved in the Gukurahundi massacres. My family and I fled to my colleague Saviour Kasukuwere's home. "We were there, about 11 of us, when the military came to his house looking for him", he said.
