Feds will drop bribery case against Sen. Bob Menendez

That appeared to be a turning point for federal prosecutors, even though Walls left the rest of the government's case intact.

The Justice Department Wednesday filed to dismiss its remaining charges against Sen.

The case went to trial a year ago, but resulted in a mistrial last November when the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. Earlier this month federal prosecutors claimed they meant to re-try Menendez "at the earliest possible date".

Prosecutors claimed that Melgen, in return for his largesse, got help from Menendez in obtaining visas for girlfriends of the doctor. The New Jersey Democrat has already spent years fighting the corruption allegations, and is expected to seek reelection later this year. Both had denied the charges. Sen. Walls had said the trial had revealed evidence on those counts was weak.

"From the very beginning, I never wavered in my innocence and my belief that justice would prevail".

"Given the impact of the court's January 24 Order on the charges and the evidence admissible in a retrial, the United States has determined that it will not retry the defendants on the remaining charges", said Nicole Navas, a spokeswoman for the Justice Department.

The motion to dismiss cites a decision last week by Judge William H. Walls to acquit Mr. Menendez of seven of the 18 charges he had faced, which included bribery charges stemming from accusations that he accepted political donations from a wealthy Florida eye doctor in exchange for lobbying on the doctor's behalf. "I am thankful that God has answered my prayers".

The defense lawyers asked the judge to dismiss all of the remaining charges "with prejudice", which if granted would bar prosecutors from every attempting to bring Menendez and Melgen to trial for the same conduct that was the subject of this case.
