Fleischer's Advice to Trump After 'S***hole' Controversy: 'Focus on Substance'

After he asked why America accepts immigrants from "shithole" countries like Haiti and El Salvador on Thursday, a debate erupted around the world about whether President Donald Trump is a racist.

Durbin, the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate, described the president's words as "hateful, vile and racist".

Botswana's government called Trump's comment "reprehensible and racist, " while Senegal's President Macky Sall said he was shocked.

"And if they say we don't have that, say, 'Well, look again, '" she added.

Donald Trump has denied using vulgar language during a private meeting with lawmakers as he faced a global backlash over his comments about immigrants.

Trump tweeted Friday that he "never said anything derogatory about Haitians" and praised his relationship with people from the country. "There is a serious need for dialogue between the United States administration and the African countries".

"Why do we need more Haitians?" The explosive remarks came during a conversation about the visa lottery program, which benefits some African countries, and about the temporary protected status given to immigrants from certain nations, including El Salvador and Haiti. Mr Ryan was one of many commentators and analysts who referred to the treatment of Irish immigrants to America in previous centuries, as criticism of Mr Trump's comments grew throughout the day.

"I think that will matter to the president", Graham told reporters after the meeting Thursday.

According to two sources, at Thursday's meeting the president questioned why the United States would want to accept immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as "sh**hole countries".

Former Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe tweeted, "SHAME ON TRUMP!". In his tweet, Mahama referred to speech made by Trump to African leaders at the United Nations in September, when the USA president praised their nations but also mistakenly referred to a nonexistent country called "Nambia". The president insisted on Twitter Friday that he didn't use that language.

Around 700,000 people are now enrolled in the DACA program, which allows enrollees to live and work in the USA for two-year periods. He said Trump's comment "not only insulted Africans, he has also insulted African-Americans".

Just before Christmas, a New York Times report emerged alleging that Trump had said people from Haiti "all have AIDS", that Nigerians all live in huts and that Afghanistan is full of terrorists.

The African Union said in its statement that while it condemn Trump's remark, maintaining a dialogue with the president was necessary to help him better understand their continent. "The president of the United States is exhausted of so many black people coming to this country", his colleague Anderson Cooper said. And she called on Trump to apologize to the American people.

Jewish American pundit and Republican commentator Bill Kristol, who has been a longtime critic of the president, tweeted: "Two weeks ago a 26-year-old soldier raced repeatedly into a burning Bronx apartment building, saving four people before he died in the flames".
