Future Nissan Vehicles May Be Able to Read Your Mind

So, classical philosopher Rene Descartes might have opined after checking out the new Brain-to-Vehicle technology that Nissan Motor Co. will unveil at the Consumer Electronics Show next week. The Japanese auto giant has developed a system it calls Brain-to-Vehicle (or B2V) which uses a medical-style skull-cap, festooned with sensors, that monitor your brain wave activity.

Nissan's Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci said: "When most people think about autonomous driving, they have a very impersonal vision of the future, where humans relinquish control to the machines".

Nissan calls this technology Brain-to-Vehicle, or B2V, and the claim is that the technology will speed up reaction times so vehicles can continually adapt to make driving more enjoyable than it is already. Researchers are making strides by using decoding technology to predict driver's actions and detect discomfort.

Nissan hopes to have some version of this technology ready for real-world use in five to 10 years, Nissan spokesman Nicholas Maxfield said.

The system is also said to detect the driver's mood and alter the driving configuration in a moment, to suit the driver's needs.

The driver would have to wear a device that measures brain-wave activity, so that it can be decoded and analysed by the B2V system.

The skullcap picks up signals that the driver is going to take action - such as braking or turning - and then it automatically begins that action 0.2 to 0.5 seconds before the driver executes the move. It will be a AI based system that learns from your brain waves patterns and in the future can predict how the auto should react to your intentions.

It says the technology is part of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility effort to transform "how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society". If you're concerned that your robo-taxi is taking corners too quickly, or not leaving enough space between you and the auto in front, Nissan's system could identify that stress and have the vehicle switch into a more cautious drive mode.

The world first system can perform actions such as initiating steering or acceleration manoeuvres up to half a second before the driver could physically react to the thought.
