Group Cautions Ortom, Fayose Over Benue Crisis

He described the crises as senseless without meaning.

In a rare display of humility and statesmanship by a Nigerian politician, Plateau State Governor, Mr. Simon Lalong, Sunday, tendered an unreserved apology to his Benue state counterpart, Samuel Ortom, over his remark that he had warned the latter not to implement the anti-open grazing law.

He said, "To be honest with you, I advised him".

He said the measure would not only restore peace and order in in the states but it would go a along way in preventing the spread of violence to other neighbouring states.

I told the governor of Benue State when he was doing the law; I said 'look, why don't you tread softly, just be careful, take other steps before you start implementation'. I have not developed the ranching areas so I can not go and say I put a law, to stop who?

"The cheap outpouring at the Presidential Villa has clearly exposed Lalong as one who has no interest in delivering democracy dividend". Perhaps, if Lalong had built on it, the Plateau people would have had another layer of security and possible avoided the death we recorded recently.

Jang, in a press statement signed by his media consultant, Clinton Garuba, said: "At a time when the mood of the nation, nay, the states that have continued to suffer decapitation in the hands of marauding killer herdsmen should be sober, it is unfortunate that someone of Lalong's standing will utter words that will be an insult on the sensitivity of the people, especially of Benue State".

The Plateau governor said he was extremely sorry for his remarks, which were not helpful at the time he should have consoled and sympathized with the government and people of Benue State over the gruesome murder of over 73 innocent persons by rampaging herdsmen. When people who trot around as leaders can not conduct themselves in that manner, it is only a pointer to the fact that they were never prepared at all for leadership.

Since the law was implemented, there have been series of attacks by suspected herdsmen on some Benue communities, with dozens of people killed in the recent attacks on Logo and Guma local government areas of the state.

"We want Nigerians to be aware of the ongoing attempt by some Governors, particularly Governors of Ekiti, Taraba and Benue State to raise illegal armies being presently recruited and armed with sophisticated weapons under the guise of protecting their states against some unknown attackers when in the true sense of it".

He maintained that population explosion has put pressure on land and it was impossible to allow the cohabitation of open grazing and farming and sued for the arrest of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore who threatened, masterminded and launched attacks on defenceless Benue citizens killing over 70 persons.
