H&M hires diversity manager after 'monkey hoodie' outrage

H&M hires diversity manager after 'monkey hoodie' outrage

Now, H&M has announced that the company has hired what they are calling a "diversity leader" to help ensure that such a mistake won't happen again.

H&M was criticized for letting a black boy model wear a hoodie that read, 'Coolest Monkey in the Jungle'.

H&M has since recalled the item from its inventory, issuing an apology and a promise to do better, and in hiring company veteran Annie Wu as their new global leader for diversity and inclusiveness, here's hoping they'll make good on that promise. Marketing has reached out to H&M for comment. Our commitment to addressing diversity and inclusiveness is genuine, therefore we have appointed a global leader, in this area, to drive our work forward.

The Stockholm-based retailer repeated that the entire incident was unintentional; that if anything it "demonstrates so clearly how big [their] responsibility is as a global brand". There will be more from us soon. The response was also mixed on its Twitter page when the statement was posted.

Earlier this month, Swedish fashion megabrand H&M was in hot water after publishing an ad that featured a Black child model wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the phrase "coolest monkey in the jungle".

Other well-known figures, such as National Basketball Association star LeBron James and "Every Step You Take" singer Diddy, also threatened to cut ties with the clothing brand due to their online faux pas.

As the internet went into meltdown about the racist connotations of the slogan, other protesters took to the streets - with an H&M store in South Africa being ransacked and its windows smashed.
