H&M Stores Vandalized In South Africa In Response to Hoodie Controversy

Recent anger over an advert by the retail giant H&M has spilled out into violence, with several store branches in South Africa being trashed by protesters. The H&M mobs were dispersed by police using rubber bullets, according to BBC.

"In Menlyn-protestors also managed to enter the shop and threw clothing around".

Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said police had to intervene at the East Rand Mall because protesters were emptying the shop.

Other nationwide demonstrations also took place in Mall of The South, Mall of Africa, Clearwater and East Rand Mall.

The EFF will, with determination and consistency, associate with the protest movement in South Africa and will also join in struggles that defy unjust laws.

H&M addressed the situation in South Africa this afternoon, saying it was closing stores in the area and that store staffs had nothing to do with its aforementioned "poor judgement".

EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu congratulated members via twitter for physically confronting racism.

Some curious shoppers walked passed the closed H&M store, wondering what happened.

In a message on its South African website, the retailer apologised for the image which sparked the protests.

National Basketball Association star LeBron James, Manchester United strike Romelu Lukaku, and singer The Weeknd were among high-profile figures who spoke out to condemn the advert.

The company has since removed the online advert.

Another user wrote: "This is racist and insensitive".

Peeping through the sealed off glass windows, one could see heaps of clothing scattered on the shop floor in the trashed business premises.

The ad was considered racist by many people on social media and prompted celebrities - including music artists The Weeknd, G-Eazy and Sean "Diddy" Combs and National Basketball Association star LeBron James - to publicly criticize H&M.

Lawrence Mogashoa, a worker at Cape Union Mart opposite H&M in Sandton City, said: "About 20 EFF members arrived at 11am".
