Health Alert: America's Child Mortality Rate

According to a new study, the USA has the worst child mortality when compared to 19 other wealthy nations. The situation of today is now getting linked with the situation in1960 where the mortality rate in the United States was higher amongst 19 richest nations.

The study which comes in front shares that if the United State will have taken the necessary steps to comes out of this situation, the number of child death from 1961 to 2010 will not be a point of shock at all.

Compared to 19 similar OECD countries, USA babies were three times more likely to die from extreme immaturity and 2.3 times more likely to experience sudden infant death syndrome between 2001 and 2010, the most recent years for which comparable data is available across all the countries.

Among the leading causes of death for the most recent decade, the researchers say, were premature births and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). "Across all ages and in both sexes, children have been dying more often in the USA than in similar countries since the 1980s".

The two leading causes of death for those 15 to 19 years old in the US during the same time period were motor vehicle accidents and assaults by firearm. In 2013, the United Nations Children's Fund ranked the USA 25th in a list of 29 developed countries for overall child health and safety.

In all of the countries, about 90 percent of child deaths occurred among infants and older teens (aged 15 to 19).

Overall, Sweden had the lowest child mortality rate among all of the countries. He is an internal medicine resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Thakrar's research supports a 2013 National Academy of Medicine report, which found Americans' health has fallen behind that of other high-income countries.

While the Republicans' tax plan, which passed Congress and was signed by President Donald Trump late previous year, partly dismantles the American healthcare system, lawmakers continue to put off refunding the national Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)-which serves 9 million children-and Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program, which expired at the end September. While the US spends the most on health care per capita compared to OECD nations, some of them have stronger public benefits programs, Thakrar says.

"The findings show that in terms of protecting child health, we're very far behind where we could be", says Christopher Forrest, M.D., Ph.D., the study's senior author and a pediatrician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Forrest added, "We hope that policymakers can use these findings to make strategic public health decisions for all USA children to ensure that we don't fall further behind peer nations".

The researchers concluded that US politicians need to fully fund the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which provides health insurance to millions of disadvantaged children, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food stamps.

As numerous analyses and studies have shown over the years, the lack of a universal healthcare system in the USA has led to higher mortality rates and poorer healthcare outcomes than in countries that have robust systems that cover all people.
