IDC reports the PC market's first quarterly growth in six years

Figures released by IDC indicate the market enjoyed its first positive holiday quarter shipment growth in six years, with shipments totalling 70.6 million units for a 0.7% increase year-on-year. The market, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, grew by 0.7 percent over the holiday season past year. Reduced sales have hit companies hard, both traditional PC makers like Dell and component makers including AMD, Intel, and all hard drive manufacturers.

IDC did note that overall growth for 2017 was down, but only by 0.2 percent.

Worldwide PC shipments fell again in the fourth quarter and full year 2017, the 13th consecutive quarterly and the sixth year of annual decline, according to the latest preliminary study from Gartner.

'The fourth quarter results showed some potentially encouraging headway against the hard environment in retail and consumer PCs, ' says Jay Chou, research manager with IDC's Personal Computing Device Tracker division, of the results.

Research manager Jay Chou said PCs that "promised all-day battery life and high portability", along with "emerging use cases that require more compute power" meant that "pockets of the consumer base are taking a serious look at these revamped PCs". "However, the overall PC market remains a challenging one". For the quarter, shipments fell 2 percent to Dollars 71.6 million units. Lenovo came in second with 22.2 percent, and Dell followed up in third with 15.7 percent.

IDC declares a statistical tie in the worldwide traditional PC market when there is a difference of one tenth of one percent or less in the share of revenues or shipments among two or more companies.

Gartner noted that PCs are no longer popular holiday gift items, and that they have become a more specialized, purpose-driven device.

The PC market saw its first holiday quarter growth in six years, showing signs that the market may be evening out after years of decline.

The company unveiled a number of new PCs ahead of a major consumer electronics show in Las Vegas this week, though it was far more muted in the smartphone arena. This will increase PC average selling prices (ASPs) and help profitability in the long run.

Lenovo had moderate growth in EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions, but shipments declined in North America. Total PC shipments in the United States reached 16.5 million units, lead by HP with a 34 percent marketshare. Good demand for gaming PCs and strong sales during the Singles Day promotion drove more shipments in the consumer PC market in China. The results outperformed the forecast of a 1.7% decline in shipments during the quarter.

For the full year, the top four vendors accounted for 64 percent of global PC shipments.
