India accounted for over 800 of IBM's patents in 2017

An annual patent survey released by IFI Claims Patent Services found that machine-learning patent applications are among the fastest growing categories.

As it has for the past quarter century, IBM (NYSE: IBM) again led the IP chase in 2017 with more than 9,000 USA patent awards on technologies such as speech recognition and distributed ledgers.

The new patents were granted to a diverse group of more than 8,500 IBM researchers, engineers, scientists and designers in the US states and 47 other countries. "Today, almost half of our patents are pioneering advancements in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, blockchain and quantum computing - and all are aimed at helping our clients create smarter businesses".

United Technologies bumped Xerox from its one-year reign securing the most USA patents of any company based in CT last year.

For the past 25 years, IBM's patent leadership has changed the way the world works with advancements critical to the modern era of computing, IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty said in a statement. More than 1,900 of IBM's patents focused on cloud-based technology while 1,200 of the newly awarded patents deal with cybersecurity. While Farmington-based UTC increased its patents 27 percent past year to almost 496 in all, Norwalk-based Xerox recorded a 39 percent decline in patents to 456 awards.

Other members of the top 10: Canon, Intel, LG Electronics, Qualcomm, Google, Microsoft, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.
