Insurgents lure US, Afghan team to meeting, then open fire

The U.S. military says one of its soldiers was wounded when insurgents launched an attack in eastern Afghanistan's remote Achin district of Nangarhar province.

US-led airstrikes killed at least 16 civilians in the Haska Mina district of Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, where Islamic State militants were active, on August 11 previous year.

The incident took place in the vicinity of Achin district where an operation is underway to eliminate the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group.

While some Afghan officials said at least two USA soldiers were killed in what was described as an insider attack by friendly forces, Capt. Tom Gresback, a US military spokesman in Afghanistan, said only one US service member had been wounded.

On the other hand, the Taliban group claims that the attack was carried out by one their fighters who had managed to infiltrate among the public uprising forces ranks.

The Pentagon has announced that they are investigating an incident in which a United States soldier was wounded after being shot by a pro-government Afghan militia in the Nangarhar Province. The MP also says a USA airstrike was called in against the militia, killing 22 of them. He said the insider attack left 16 Afghan and US forces dead.

The attack came hours after the provincial government announced in a statement that Afghan forces killed almost two dozen Taliban insurgents, including four commanders, in the nearby Khogyani district.

"We are looking into the details of engagement with our Afghan partners and will provide more information when appropriate", Gresback said. Afghan forces backed by USA air power routinely conduct anti-terrorism operations in the province bordering Pakistan. The militia leader was killed, and the American service member and the interpreter were wounded.
