Involuntary manslaughter charges filed in connection to Kansas swatting death

A Los Angeles man accused of making a false 911 call to Sedgwick County has been flown to Kansas to face charges. Barriss, who was allegedly given the address by one of the players and asked to "swat" the home, is suspected to have made the call, claiming to be the perpetrator of a homicide and hostage situation and giving police an address that he believed belonged to the other gamer.

Barriss is now being held in the Sedgwick County jail on a $500,000 bond.

Tyler Barriss, 25, made his first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court following extradition from California.

Tyler Barriss is read his official charges including involuntary manslaughter.

For those unaware, "swatting" is when someone calls in a false police report that results in SWAT swarming in for an arrest, and Barriss has already faced prison time once before back in 2016. It has gained traction in recent years among online gamers. When Wichita police responded, a man, later identified as Andy Finch, 28, emerged from the front door and was fatally shot by an officer. Instead, one gamer is said to have provided two others with the Wichita address where Finch was killed.

Barriss had a reputation for helping people gain revenge against online enemies and gaming opponents through swatting - placing a hoax phone call about a risky situation in order to trigger a massive police response at an address to frighten its occupants.

He was extradited from the Los Angeles County jail Thursday morning.

Barriss has also been linked to swatting incidents in IL and New Hampshire, according to court records.

The Kansas City Police Department received a 9-1-1 call alleging that a family was being held hostage after the father had been killed by an intruder. The woman involved in the Calgary incident reportedly told police that Barriss targeted her because of her online presence, according to Rolling Stone.

When he raised his hands suddenly, police say, a officer who was standing in a driveway across the street shot him.
