Iran To Trump: Nuclear Deal Not Negotiable

President Trump announced Friday he would waive the sanctions against Iran for the "last time," giving the US and its European partners a 120-day deadline to strengthen the deal that prohibits Iran from developing a nuclear program in exchange for entrance into worldwide commerce and banking.

As part of an agreement with Congress, the president has to sign a waiver suspending the sanctions every 120 days.

Trump has argued behind the scenes that the nuclear deal makes the United States look weak, a senior US official said.

Russian Federation today said Washington would be making a grave mistake by pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal, adding that Moscow would work hard to keep the landmark agreement alive.

Russian Federation - one of the parties to the Iran pact alongside the United States, China, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union - called Trump's comments "extremely negative".

Bhala, the Brenneisen Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, said the announcement is important in that "it preserves the July 2015 Nuclear Deal, for now, which the other countries in the deal also support".

Earlier in October, Trump has threatened to terminate the 2015 Iran nuclear deal if Congress and USA allies fail to amend the agreement by fixing serious flaws in significant ways. "And if at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately", he warned.

The Treasury Department also targeted 14 more Iranian individuals and entities involved in human rights abuses and ballistic missile development with sanctions.

Two senior Trump administration officials told Reuters that the president, a Republican, had privately expressed reluctance to heed the advice of top advisers recommending he not reimpose the suspended sanctions.

A decision to withhold a waiver would have effectively ended the deal that limits Iran's nuclear program.

"We know the European Union and other powers want to keep the nuclear deal, nearly no matter what", David Pollock, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, told Xinhua. The last time Trump issued a waiver was in September 2017.

In July 2015, Iran and six major powers - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - struck an accord formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in which Iran pledged to curb activities such as uranium enrichment.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker has been working on amending a United States law to include "trigger points" that if crossed by Iran would automatically bring back U.S. sanctions.

A senior American official said that one of the main issues Trump wants to see addressed is the "sunset clause" of the nuclear deal, which ends some of the restrictions put on Iran's nuclear program within ten or fifteen years of its signing date.

"The nuclear deal is an internationally recognized and concluded pact and is not renegotiable", Tehran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that Iran "will not accept any change in the deal, neither now nor in future".
