Jerusalem should be shared capital, Boris Johnson tells Al Malki

"We (the Arab League) will confront the decision by seeking a resolution, an global one, to recognize a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital", Safadi said.

Trump angered the Palestinians last week when he threatened in a pair of tweets to cut funding to the United Nations agency that handles Palestinian refugees if the Palestinian Authority doesn't talk peace with Israel.

The report, published on Saturday 6 January, titled "Tapes Reveal Egyptian Leaders' Tacit Acceptance of Jerusalem Move" by David D. Kirkpatrick, the Times' worldwide correspondent based in London, said the newspaper obtained four audio recordings of an alleged Egyptian intelligence officer talking to the hosts of several talk shows in Egypt.

Last week, U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley said the Trump administration was seriously considering cutting funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), an agency that provides assistance to about 5 million Palestinian refugees.

The top PLO official revealed that the upcoming PLO Central Council meeting will "define the relationship with Israel in all its aspects and how to confront the US decision".

The Palestinians have strongly protested the decision, and Trump has threatened to take action against those who challenged him.

After Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the Palestinians declared that the U.S.no longer had a role to play in the Middle East peace talks.

The Saudi foreign minister said Riyadh's position toward Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Palestine is firm and had not changed, adding that the ministerial meeting came up with some proposals to counter the U.S. decision and support the Palestinian, Arab and Islamic stand on Jerusalem and the Arab-Israeli dispute.

The Trump administration already had a credibility problem with many Palestinians because of his equivocal attitude toward a two-state solution, in which an independent Palestinian state would exist alongside Israel.

Trump complained this week on Twitter of the millions of dollars that his country devotes in financial aid to the Palestinians, an aid that has few benefits for Washington and should be cut, according to the president.

"[Jerusalem's status] should be determined as part of settlement negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians".

The Palestinians have repeatedly warned that changing the legal and political status of Jerusalem would undermine the peace process.

This is one month after US President Donald Trump recognised the city as Israel's capital. Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in the 1967 6-Day war.

"For the Arab and Islamic world, there is no issue bigger than Jerusalem", he said.

"Those who prophesied that the Arab and Muslim response to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital would be apocalyptic - waves of anti-American demonstrations, mass violence against US citizens, institutions and interests, and the final and irrevocable end of American influence in the region", he added, "[they] seem to have been totally wrong".
