John Young, Nasa astronaut who walked on the moon, dies aged 87

His cause of death is believed to be complications from pneumonia, with his official date of death being Friday, January 5, 2018. This group included such luminaries as Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, Pete Conrad, Ed White, Thomas Stafford and of course, Neil Armstrong.

He ended up as one of NASA's most experienced flyers, becoming the first astronaut to fly into space six times, and the only one to enter space in each of the Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programs.

During his career, he logged 34 days, 19 hours and 39 minutes in space, including 20 hours and 14 minutes walking on the moon.

"Between his service in the U.S. Navy, where he retired at the rank of captain, and his later work as a civilian at NASA, John spent his entire life in service to our country", Lightfoot said.

Young was in Nasa's second astronaut class, chosen in 1962, along with the likes of Neil Armstrong, Pete Conrad and James Lovell. He gained is wings of gold in December, 1954.

Young, who was born in San Francisco, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952. He is noted for a pair of time-to-climb records in the Phantom II during this period.

The previous Navy test pilot was not only extraordinary at flying spacecraft.

On his second trip, Young walked on the satellite as part of Apollo 16 in 1972.

On Apollo 10 in May 1969, he circled the moon alone as Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan came within 47,000 feet of the moon's surface. He and his crewmates scouted landing sites from lunar orbit and tested all procedures and components of the lunar and command modules. Young flew twice to the Moon, walked on its surface & flew the first Space Shuttle mission. "He went to space six times in the Gemini, Apollo & Space Shuttle programs".

The astronaut John Young, who walked on the moon and commanded the first space shuttle flight, has died.

But Young also became the first man to be reprimanded by Nasa and Congress - for smuggling a corned beef sandwich into space. He served as commander again for STS-9 in 1983 for his final spaceflight.

"Anybody who ever flew in space admired John", said Crippen, a close friend who last spoke to Young a few months ago.
