King supports president's signing of act to keep opioids out of US

US President Donald Trump signed the International Narcotics Trafficking Emergency Response by Detecting Incoming Contraband with Technology, orINTERDICT Act [text, PDF], on Wednesday, with the objective of affording border protection agents enhanced opioid screening technology.

The International Narcotics Trafficking Emergency Response by Detecting Incoming Contraband with Technology Act "directs the Department of Homeland Security to provide additional tools and resources to detect and intercept the supply of illicit fentanyl, which is our new big scourge", President Donald Trump said before signing the bill.

The bill, the INTERDICT Act, approves $9 million in federal funding for screening devices that can identify a substance like fentanyl in the field at ports of entry and to help staff use them.

Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., the bill's sponsor, said "80 to 90 percent" of synthetic fentanyl comes from China through Mexico.

Over the past six years, drug overdose deaths have become the most common cause of violent death in the USA, over and above road traffic accidents or weapons.

Just last month data from the CDC showed that OH had the second-highest death rate by drug overdose in the nation in 2016.

Fentanyl is directly linked to more than 700 deaths between the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2015, according to the latest data from the DEA. Find us on Facebook too!
