Martin Luther King Jr. Day closings

As the world prepares to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s passing, Twitter is gathering some of the world's most influential people and celebrities to share their thoughts on the man who changed the world.

Some reporters indicated the irony of the president honoring King, who fought for equality and justice for African-Americans, one day after he disparaged African nations.

Naturally, many weren't pleased to see the reality TV star-turned-politician commemorate a holiday honoring a champion of civil rights like Dr. King, after such overtly racist comments against Black and brown people.

The president has been under fire for reportedly telling a bipartisan meeting of lawmakers on immigration Thursday that the US didn't need more immigrants from "s-hole countries" in Africa. Virtually all other focus in Washington has been set aside, amid the fallout from those remarks.

"I don't think that President Trump is a racist in the traditional sense as we know in this country". Day, hours after denying he had used the term "shithole" to refer to Haiti and countries in Africa, wasn't lost on those in the room with him. Trump had met the previous day with the prime minister of Norway.

Ironically, Friday marks the eighth anniversary of the devastating quake in Haiti, in addition to MLK Jr. Day. Ben Carson, U.S. secretary of Housing and Urban Development and the sole African-American member of Trump's Cabinet.

"Mr. President, will you give an apology for the statement yesterday?"

Mayor Kapszukiewicz said Reverend King's "I Have a Dream" speech is one of the most quoted texts in the history of the English language and that the country still is struggling with numerous same issues the activist addressed decades ago.
