Marvel and Scarlett Johansson are finally making a standalone 'Black Widow' movie

Wednesday saw it learned that Marvel Studios hired Jac Schaeffer to pen the Black Widow movie script, with it said the film wasn't definitely green lit as of yet. Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several candidates before tapping Schaeffer, and Marvel execs met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a "Black Widow" writer.

Fans have been asking for a solo Black Widow movie ever since Scarlett Johansson first appeared in Iron Man 2 as Natasha Romanoff.

Black Widow was announced as being in "very early" development earlier this week, but has yet to receive an official greenlight. The actress reprised the role in 2012's The Avengers, 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

Black Widow will be seen next in this year's Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 1.

Recycled footage of the character appeared in Thor: Ragnarok.

She earned a writing credit on the Disney short which opened with Coco: Olaf's Frozen Adventure.

The Captain Marvel movie starring Brie Larson as the titular character is now in development which will be Marvel's first female-led superhero film and hopefully, it'll open the floodgates and show the successful movie studio that there's an appetite for these sorts of comic book movies. There are now no announced plans for such a film. But think about the other recent additions to the MCU's ever-growing slate that featured a single character's name in the title.

None of this is to suggest that a Black Widow solo movie will inevitably rob the eponymous heroine of the spotlight she deserves. "You just have to find it and find what honors what's already there with the source material but also brings it into a more entertaining form for the audience".
