Mason Holgate facing ban threat over 'homophobic tweets'

Mason Holgate facing ban threat over 'homophobic tweets'

But it was another clash in the opening 45 minutes that got everyone talking.

Holgate might receive some leniency due to the fact that he was only 15 when he posted his own tweets, but the FA tend to take a dim view of these incidents.

After Mason Holgate dangerously pushed Roberto Firmino into the crowd, the Brazilian ran towards the Everton defender shouting furiously.

Holgate then complained to Madley after the game that Firmino had used the word "negro".

He's facing a potential misconduct charge from the FA after they've opened an investigation, per The Times.

The tweets emerged after Holgate accused Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino of racially abusing him during an ill-tempered Merseyside derby last Friday.

Amidst the controversy, Holgate has also deleted his whole Twitter account.

Old posts from his account were claimed to have been found by some Liverpool fans after he was involved in the row with Firmino during Everton's 2-1 FA Cup defeat. But the governing body does not regard that as a defence of the player's conduct or mitigation.

The England Under-21 global deleted his personal Twitter account following the defeat to Liverpool amid the accusations and he could end up facing a suspension for them, much like Andre Gray did during his time at Burnley.

There is a precedent with the FA for suspending players based on homophobic language used on social media, regardless of how old the posts are.

Everton's academy product could be looking at a similar ban to Watford's Andre Gray after he was suspended from playing for four matches after sending homophobic tweets four years ago while playing for non-league Hinckley United.
