MLAs, MPs Find their Names Missing in 1st Draft

"While Assam was the only state which prepared an NRC way back in 1951 in the wake of post-Partition migrations, Assam will again be the only state to have a Register which will contain the names of all genuine Indian citizens residing in the state". All of them have also asked others to not worry about the missing names as the list is still a work in progress document.

The publication of the first draft has not been met with any violent protest as anticipated.

Banerjee had yesterday accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of "hatching a conspiracy" to drive out Bengalis from Assam by "excluding" their names from the first draft of the NRC, which was published on the midnight of December 31.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal appealed to residents to not panic if their names didn't appear in the first list.

However, according to News18 Assam and NorthEast, Barua had rejected the NRC and said that this list is a conspiracy to "Indianise" the Assamese populace. "In case even that does not show our names, doors of Supreme Court are open", said Ajmal.

Bhattacharyya added it was only because of strict monitoring by the Supreme Court that the draft NRC could see the light of day.

Mittal was commenting over the category of Doubtful voters, called "D-voter" where a person's name has been struck off from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and thereby denied basic fundamental rights guaranteed to every Indian citizen. “I fail to understand why the State government did not expedite the NRC update process.

The massive exercise aimed at identifying illegal immigrants in the state that borders Bangladesh is being carried out in Assam following a decision in 2005 after a series of meetings between the central and state governments and the influential All Assam Students' Union (AASU). Bangladesh has consistently denied that its citizens have illegally emigrated to India. The situation is further compounded by that fact that many illegal migrants who were declared foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunals have either absconded to other states to evade arrest or are dead. Praful Mohanta of AGP told News18, "It is a historic moment". However, the absence of any clear policy as to how to deal with the proclaimed illegal migrants has created a sense of unease in the minds of many presently residing in Assam.

The issue of illegal immigration from neighbouring Bangladesh is one of the most controversial subjects in Assam's socio-political life since several decades. However, three MPs from Assam's main opposition party AIUDF, including Dubri's Badruddin Ajmal and Karimganj's Radhey Shyam could not make it to the first draft of the NRC, a News 18 report stated.
