Republican senators claim to have not heard Trump's 'shithole' countries remark

Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin said in a brief written statement to the media Thursday that the comments, as reported, were "not helpful" to the goal of immigration reform and securing U.S. borders.

"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" the Washington Post quoted him as saying. Day, according to The Daily Beast.

After statements from Housing and Urban Development SecretaryBen Carson and King's nephew, Pastor Isaac Newton Farris, Trump gleefully signed the proclamation, handing the black marker to Farris as a keepsake, as is presidential tradition.

The comments, first reported Thursday by The Washington Post, were made during a presentation by Durbin and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham about bipartisan legislation to protect from deportation those immigrants who were illegally brought to the U.S.as children by their parents.

"You've seen the comments in the press - I have not read one of them that's inaccurate", Durbin said Friday. To no surprise, the president started tweeting this morning, denying that he used those words. "It is not true".

"Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a frequent Trump critic, said the president's comment "smacks of blatant racism, the most odious and insidious racism masquerading poorly as immigration policy".

Haiti's government on Friday condemned US President Donald Trump's reported remarks about its people as "racist".

Mr Trump continued: "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. There is no other word one can use but 'racist'".

"The programme that was being discussed at the White House meeting is called Temporary Protection Status. Probably should record future meetings - unfortunately, no trust!" he wrote.

"Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country".

Note: syracuse.com does not typically publish expletives uncensored, but does not edit language when it comes from the president of the United States.

"When Trump uttered his vulgar attacks yesterday against Haitians and Africans, he exposed the white supremacy at the core of USA policy towards Haiti", the statement said. This particular commentary is undoubtedly the mildest of the many we've featured.

Colville warns that comments by a major political figure, such as the president of the United States, can have damaging and risky consequences.
