Rory McIlroy Reveals He Has Heart Irregularity, Plans to Play Through Issue

Rory McIlroy Reveals He Has Heart Irregularity, Plans to Play Through Issue

The Irish golfer traced the condition back to a bad viral infection he had 18 months ago in China, leading to some scar tissue and the thickening of his left ventricle.

Golf superstar Rory McIlroy said Friday he's planning to play through a heart irregularity that will require biannual testing. However, it turns out that McIlroy's health issues weren't confined to his ribs. "For now, I just need to stay on top of it and have to stay fit", the Northern Irishman told the newspaper.

"The rib's fine, no problems whatsoever", he told the Daily Telegraph.

"But I've got a bit of an irregularity with my heart that I have to keep on top of".

Then, after taking a break to get married in April, McIlroy said he overdid it in his preparation for the Players Championship, the injury flaring again.

However, the four-time major victor has since released a statement on Instagram downplaying any health fears.

"It's nice to be world number one, sure, and I will get back there, but it's all about winning tournaments", he said.

McIlroy missed extensive time last season due to the rib injury and will return from a almost four-month break next week at the Abu Dhabi Championship. The first three years with my career I struggled when it came to that head-to-head stuff down the stretch, with the big guys, but now I actually think it's when I am at my best. "I knew within myself that I couldn't compete at the end of last season because I hadn't done the work beforehand, and that's because I hadn't been fit enough and if you can't practice, you can't compete".

The 2016 FedExCup champion will get a chance to test the strength of his heart with plans to play possibly six times in seven weeks on the PGA TOUR once he returns.
