Though, the women were set aside in the stands from the male-only crowd with nominated seating in the supposed family section at King Abdullah Sports City stadium, as per reports of ABC News.

The introduction of women to soccer matches in Saudi is part of reforms in the Kingdom with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 32, seen by many as the face of that change.

But even segregated as they were, their presence in the stadium marked a significant moment for the Kingdom.

"Family sections" also allowed married couples, direct relatives and groups of friends to sit together. One female was arrested for attending a game in Saudi Arabia back in December 2014.

Ahead of the game, clubs took to Twitter to encourage women in attending the local match offering them traditional robes in team colours.

In a one-off, the stadium in Riyadh allowed.

Saudi Arabia's royal family and religious establishment adhere to an austere form of Sunni Islam and Islamic codes of behaviour, which are strictly enforced.

There are, however, several things that Saudi women still can not do without the permission of the men in their lives - including applying for passports, travelling overseas, getting married, opening a bank account, starting particular businesses, getting elective surgery, or leaving prison.
