Seahawks fire offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell — BREAKING REPORT

Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has been fired after seven seasons with the team, ProFootballTalk reported late Tuesday night, citing a source informed of the decision.

In January 2011, Pete Carroll hired Bevell to become the new offensive coordinator to replace Jeremy Bates, who served in the role for only one year. Seattle also finished fourth in the league in total offense in 2015.

Bevell has come under fire over the last several seasons, starting with his fateful decision to call for a slant near the goal line toward the tail end of Seattle's Super Bowl XLIX loss to the New England Patriots.

Carroll said after the game that he was responsible for that play call.

A source told the Times earlier Tuesday that the team was still evaluating coaching positions in the wake of a 9-7 season that saw Seattle miss the playoffs for the first time since 2011. "We go into a game knowing what the defense is going to give us, the situations that we're going to be in". Offensively, that's what we've seen time and time again is that we do not execute the way that we should. And that's on us as players. Seattle ranked as high as fourth in the National Football League in total offense at 378.6 yards per game in 2015, but struggled specifically with its running game the past two seasons, which also took a toll on the offense as a whole.

The firing would be the first of a coordinator for the Seahawks since the removal of Bates following the 2010 season. The 2012 to 2015 seasons, however, all rank among the top eight in franchise history in terms of points scored.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Seattle's offense had one of its most productive seasons the following year.

The Seahawks had just four rushing touchdowns as a team, and Mike Davis was their leading rusher among running backs with just 240 yards.

Offensive line coach Tom Cable is in charge of Seattle's running game.
