Serena Williams Talks Setting Grand Slam Record, Medical Issues and Return

The superstar athlete and her adorable baby girl, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, graces the cover of the venerable fashion magazine's February issue and inside, Williams opens up about marriage, motherhood, and her return to the tennis court.

Williams, 36, had alluded to "complications" that ensued, but she tells writer Rob Haskell that there were some harrowing moments because she experienced a pulmonary embolism, a recurrence of an issue that left her "on my death bed" in 2011. While the surgery went was relatively drama-free, it took a turn for the worse a few days later.

The next day, Serena felt short of breath and went to get a nurse. The ultrasound revealed nothing, so they sent her for the CT, and sure enough, several small blood clots had settled in her lungs. During surgery, doctors "found that a large hematoma had flooded her abdomen, the result of a medical Catch-22 in which the potentially lifesaving blood thinner caused hemorrhaging at the site of her C-section".

But the drama was not over. "She returned yet again to the OR to have a filter inserted into a major vein, to prevent more clots from dislodging and traveling into her lungs", Haskell writes.

Serena was noticeably absent from social media in the weeks after Alexis' birth, and was not seen in public until mid-October, when DailyMail.com obtained photos of her meeting with wedding planner Preston Bailey in New Orleans.

"On top of everything she was going through, the feeling of not being able to help made it even harder", Ohanian told Vogue of his wife. While she discussed the difficulties she faced, admitting "sometimes I get really down and feel like, Man, I can't do this", she also pointed to the support she has received from fellow tennis players.

The new mum was allowed to go home a week later to be with her child. I guess that's just who I am. The emotions are insane'.

"No one talks about the low moments--the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry", Williams told Vogue.

She then added: 'I've broken down I don't know how many times.
