Suspected LeakedSource operator charged in Canada

A Canadian man accused of operating the LeakedSource.com website, a major repository of stolen online credentials, has been arrested and charged with trafficking in billions of stolen personal identity records, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said on Monday. LeakedSource.com had a database of approximately three billion personal identity records and associated passwords that could be purchased for a small fee. The 27-year-old Jordan Evan Bloom of Thornhill, Ontario is behind the notorious LeakedSource.com that compiled public data breaches and sold access to this data, including passwords in cleartext.

After more than a year and a half of investigating, Staff Sgt. Maurizio Rosa, a member of the RCMP's national cybercrime investigative team, called Bloom the "middle man" between the dark web and the internet Canadians use every day.

Rosa said the information of some Canadians was on the website and more Canadians could be at risk. "The RCMP will continue to work diligently with our domestic and global law enforcement partners to prosecute online criminality". Bloom's efforts are alleged to have earned him C$247,000 (US$198,500, £144,000).

The RCMP thanked Dutch police and the FBI for aiding their investigation.

LeakedSource.com is now offline.

Home to one of the largest online collections of stolen usernames and passwords online, the website collected data from numerous massive data breaches including LinkedIn, MySpace, DropBox and AdultFriendFinder with the website heavily advertised on underground hacker forums. The Ashley Madison website was breached in July 2015, exposing usernames and passwords for 37 million users.

"That password if it has been compromised in the past due to illegal or criminal activity may still be used to compromise sites and services that they are still accessing by re-using the same password and/or username".
