Tomic fails to qualify for Australian Open

Tomic fails to qualify for Australian Open

Tomic, the world No.142, will further slump in the ATP rankings as he will lose his points earned from a third-round appearance at Melbourne Park a year ago.

"I just count money, that's all I do".

It was a bad day all round for Australians with John-Patrick Smith and Bradley Mousley also both missing out on qualification at the final hurdle. "I count my millions", said the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, who reached the third round at Melbourne Park previous year.

The delay didn't help the local hopes, who lost in straight sets on Sunday morning.

"You go do what I did [on the court]". The Australian was cruising to a quick victory at 5-2 in the second set, but at 5-3 had his service broken by Paul for the first time, and then the American won a tiebreak 7-5 to extend the match to a deciding third set.

"You go make 13-14 million".

Tennis Australia said it had reached out to Tomic out of fear for his "health and wellbeing" in November but declined to offer him a wildcard for the grand slam.

"I'm not going to say anything [about not getting a wildcard]", he said.

"For me, it's not a big problem".

He was fined a Wimbledon-record $20,000 after admitting to feigning injury and being "a little bored" during a listless first-round loss to Mischa Zverev at The All England Club. Bernard Tomic delivered a parting shot after the out-of-sorts Australian failed to qualify for his home grand slam for the first time since 2008.
