Train Carrying Republican Lawmakers to Retreat Crashes Into Truck

A train carrying members of Congress to a GOP retreat struck a garbage truck in Virginia and at least one person aboard the truck may be dead, according to multiple lawmakers on the train.

Rep. John Faso, a New York Republican, who was on the train, said that he was told that people in the truck were injured, while those on the train were unharmed, CNN reported.

Amtrak has released a statement that claimed there were no reported injuries to passengers on the train, although it made no mention of people who were sitting inside the truck.

The lawmakers were scheduled to spend the next few days at the West Virginia resort for their annual issues conference.

Paul Ryan's office said the Republican House speaker was "fine".

The congressmen were on their way to the GOP retreat in Greenbrier, West Virginia, Alabama Rep. Bradley Byrne wrote on Twitter.

Several members of Congress including Pete Sessions and Greg Walden tweeted that they were safe.

While injuries on the train were described as minor, Rep. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., tweeted that he was helping the injured.

The Amtrak train crashed with the truck in Crozet, which is west of Charlottesville, at 11:20 a.m. local time.

He said the train stopped quickly after impact. He said he is treating those who are injured. Michael Burgess, R-Texas, Phil Roe, R-Tenn., and Sen.

Utah Senator Mike Lee said that what appeared to be a "garbage truck" was "cut in half".

He said lawmakers had not been told when they would resume their trip to their retreat.
